Tunis and Sidi Bou Said (Tunisia)

Sidi Bou Said (سيدي بو سعيد)

Sidi Bou Said is a picturesque city founded by Spanish Moors in the XV century. It is situated 20 km off Tunis at the gorgeous azure coast of the Mediterranean Sea. It delights with narrow lanes, characteristic white houses with the blue shutters, blue doors, bay windows... Tourists also come here for one more reason, i.e. a beautiful view over the bay.

A long time ago it was a residence of Abou Said ibn Khalef ibn Yahia Ettamini el Beji - the one the city owes its name to. Previously it was called Jabal el-Menar. In my opinion, it is the city worth visiting while being in Tunis, at least for the fact that it is the place of gathering for many artists. This is what Paul Klee wrote after his first contact with the city: Sidi Bou Said, the town that we first saw from the ship. Drove all the way up... The town lies so beautifully up there and looks far over the sea... Stopped by a garden gate and began a watercolor sketch.

Tunis (تونس)

XIII century Moroccan traveller Abu Abdallah Mohammed ibn Mohammed ibn Ali ibn Ahmed ibn Masoud ibn Hajj al-Abdari al-Hihi wrote: We arrived at Tunis, object of all our hopes, focus of the flame of every gaze, rendezvous of travellers from East and West. This is where fleets and caravans come to meet. Here you will find everything a man could desire. You want to go by land? Here are endless companions for your journey. You prefer the sea? Here are boats for every direction. Tunis is a crown whose every jewel is a district, its suburbs are like a flower-garden constantly refreshed by the breeze. If you come to her watering-places, she will quench your thirst; if you fall back on her resources, she will cure your problems; her gardens are like brides, her worth is written in many books.1

Tunis – the city founded by Phoenicians, since about VII B.C. under the rule of Carthage. Destroyed by Romans in 146 B.C.; since 670 AD governed by Arabs. In XVI, Tunis came under the reign of Turks and in 1881 the city was taken over by the French (many Tunisians speak French these days). In 1956 Tunisia obtained independence, Habib Bourgiba became the first president whereas Tunis acquired the status of capital.

And this is stunning Medina, the oldest part of Tunis that was even listed as a world heritage of UNESCO. Narrow lanes, marketplaces, palaces, tombs and mosques, including Zitouna mosque from IX century.

Unfortunately, half a day is too little for visiting Tunis. It was enough only for strolling down the Bourguiba Street, walking down less visited, not too clean lanes and running through Medina or rather its tiny part. We were supposed to go on a tour again but it did not work out, hence this poor selection of photographs.
